Seven teams of Frisco ISD students participated in competitive challenges at the Destination Imagination (DI) Global Finals, the world’s largest celebration of student creativity.
The event, held May 23-26 in Knoxville, Tenn., featured more than 1,400 of the top-scoring DI teams from 45 U.S. states and 14 countries.
Destination Imagination is a parent-led program in which students develop solutions to problem-based challenges in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), fine arts and service learning. Students collaborate to develop creative, innovative solutions, which are presented at tournaments.
A group of students from Sparks Elementary placed fifth at the global tournament, the highest among FISD teams. The students – Nikita Srinivas, Alessandro Amundarain Chirico, Malavika Kothapally, Anish Bhagyanagar, Heloísa Araujo, Ragini Malik and Mann Bellani – competed in the Improvisational Challenge, which required them to research different cultures and famous explorers and then use what they learned to create a skit, live onstage, with barely any preparation. The skit had to include a quest to return a lost cultural treasure to its owner, but the team didn’t find out which cultural treasure or explorers they needed to integrate into their skit until right before their presentation.
Teams of students from Hosp Elementary and Lebanon Trail and Liberty high schools also finished in the top ten in their respective events.
Also competing were students from Isbell, McSpedden and Smith elementary schools, Vandeventer Middle School and Reedy High School.
To qualify for Globals, teams had to advance from both the regional and state affiliate tournaments. The full results from the global tournament are as follows:
