Frisco ISD’s wrestling depth showed again Saturday as seven athletes from the District finished in the top three in their respective weight classes and three teams finished in the top 10 of the 5A standings at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Wrestling Meet.
Liberty High School led the way for FISD, with its boys team finishing third and the girls team finishing fifth at the Berry Center in Cypress. Centennial High School finished 10th in the boys standings, followed by Frisco High School (11th) and Lone Star High School (12th).
Three Liberty wrestlers finished second in their respective weight classes: Broderick Green, Savannah West and Ashley Cook. When they competed in championship matches Saturday afternoon, the other Liberty wrestlers were their loudest supporters.
“That’s the tradition of the team at Liberty. They’re good on both the girls and guys sides, and they work together as a family,” said Liberty coach Cody Bridwell. “They have high expectations of each other, and the girls root for the guys, and the guys root for the girls.”
Frisco High’s Tyler Brennan finished off a tremendous junior season by winning the 5A state title at 106 pounds. He pinned his first two opponents at the state meet, won his semifinal by a 15-0 score, and then defeated Prosper’s John Richardson 9-2 in the championship match. He finished with a 38-1 record this season.
“Tyler is a quiet, humble wrestler with a fierce competitive nature that pushes him to outwork everyone,” Frisco coach Scott Pope said. “His dedication to the sport and his pursuit of excellence is something that I wish I could copy and paste into every athlete I have.”
One reason for Brennan’s success, Pope said, is that he competes against FISD wrestlers throughout the season.
“When you are competing at such a high level every week like we do in Frisco, it forces you to improve,” the coach said. “Four of the top 12 boys teams at the state championships are from Frisco ISD.”
In total, 16 FISD wrestlers finished in the top six of their respective brackets at the meet. An FISD team has finished in the top three of the standings every year since 2013, the first year when the UIL had more than one size classification for wrestling. Prior to 2013, all schools competed against each other at the state wrestling meet, regardless of size. In 2014 and 2015, Centennial won 5A boys state championships.
