Liberty Students Advance to State in Cross Examination Debate
Liberty High School students took the top two places in UIL Cross Examination Debate at the district competition this past weekend. The first-place team was Ria Bhasin and Priya Nalliah, while the team of Kruthi Kanduri and Amina Syeda won second place. Both teams will advance to the state competition in Austin March 16-17. Finishing in third was Jonathan Medrano and Ardell Simeon from Lone Star High School, who will serve as state alternates.
In Cross Examination Debate, teams of two students each present arguments on either the affirmative or negative side of an assigned topic. Teams don’t learn whether they must make the affirmative or negative case until right before the debate. This year’s topic involves federal education policy.
Students Win Bowling Title at Special Olympics Winter Games
Matthew Abebe, a junior at Liberty High School, and his sister Bethany Abebe, a freshman at Lebanon Trail High School, teamed up to win a bowling title at the Texas Special Olympics Winter Games last weekend. Matthew, who competes for the Frisco Flyers Special Olympics team, competed with his sister as a unified team, which combines a Special Olympian with an athlete without intellectual disabilities. They are planning to compete in the Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle in July.
Liberty Swimmer Sets Region Meet Record
Liberty High School senior Jiwoo Oh set a 3-5A Region Meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke Saturday with a time of 57.43 seconds. Oh is one of 51 Frisco ISD swimmers who qualified for the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Swimming and Diving Meet that will take place Feb. 16-17 in Austin.
Reedy Student to Perform on NPR Program
John Kaiser, bassoon player from Reedy High School, will perform as a special guest on the “From the Top” radio show with Host Christopher O’Riley in San Antonio. He and O’Riley will perform the II. Aria Sonatine for Bassoon and Piano by Alexandre Tansman. The show will be recorded on February 14, but will air on National Public Radio on April 2. Kaiser is a student of Reedy Band Director Gavin Smith and private teacher Dr. Jennifer Auerbach.
CHS Teacher Wins Eduphoria Contest
Congratulations to Carol Gross, animation teacher and student news advisor at Centennial High School, for being selected winner of the Eduphoria Bumper Sticker Contest. The new bumper sticker was available at the Eduphoria booth at the Texas Computer Education Association convention held in Austin this week.
