Over 70 Frisco ISD student athletes competed in the 2017 UIL 5A State Swimming and Diving Championships on February 17 and 18 at the Texas Swim Center in Austin.
Four Frisco ISD teams finished in the top ten in the team standings. They were the girls from Frisco High School (3rd), the Frisco High boys (5th), the Wakeland High School girls (5th) and the Reedy High School girls (10th).
In the swimming relays, Frisco High’s team of Abby Lin, Jadyn Jannasch, Emily Lenihan and Courtney Nelson took first place in the Girls 200-Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:45.75, which was a new 5A state record. The Frisco High Boys 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team of Thomas Lauerman, Charles Smith, Joey Belair and Jack Jannasch were also crowned state champions, swimming a time of 1:26.38. Wakeland’s team of Priscilla Jacobson, Lydia Medigovich, Ana Reyes and Alex Bumpas finished third in the Girls 400-Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:35.03.
Individually, Frisco ISD saw one of its swimmers crowned state champion with four others finishing second or third across seven events.
Reedy’s Abby Kozco took home a state championship for the second consecutive year in the Girls 100-Yard Backstroke, swimming a time of 56.25. Wakeland’s Alex Bumpas took second place in the Girls 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 23.48 and third in the Girls 100-Yard Freestyle with a time of 50.93. Also taking home two individual medals was Jack Jannasch of Frisco High. Jannasch won silver in the Boys 50-Yard Freestyle and bronze in the Boys 100-Yard Freestyle, swimming those races in 20.76 and 45.92, respectively. Emily Lenihan of Frisco High brought home two individual medals of her own, swimming the Girls 100-Yard Backstroke in 58.40 for silver and the Girls 100-Yard Butterfly in 55.92 for bronze. And Frisco High’s Jadyn Jannasch placed second in the Girls 100-Yard Breaststroke, finishing that race in 1:03.12.
Wakeland coach Melissa Howard was named NFHS State Coach of the Year for Boys Swimming and Diving.
Congratulations to Coach Howard and all the Frisco ISD swimmers and divers who competed at State for continuing traditions of excellence and representing their schools and community with pride.
