Frisco ISD will send student teams from all nine high schools to the Texas Academic Decathlon State Meet, set for February 24-25 in El Paso.
It’s a testament to the District’s commitment to excellence and model of smaller high schools, which provides many opportunities for students to excel in academics, athletics and fine arts.
Wakeland, Centennial, Lone Star, Heritage, Independence, Liberty, Frisco and Reedy high schools all finished in the top ten for medium-sized schools at the Regional Tournament held January 20-21 at Coppell High School and advance to the state tournament.
Lebanon Trail High School qualified for state in the small schools division, competing only with freshmen and two fewer students than many participating schools.
Academic Decathlon provides high school students with an opportunity to experience the challenges of rigorous academic competition through participation in team activities.
Each team is comprised of nine students who are tested in ten categories including Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech. Students can obtain medals as a team and individually in each subject.
Frisco ISD teams all posted scores in the top 25 in the state in their division. Only 30 teams advance to state competition in the medium schools division – FISD schools make up more than 25 percent of that number.
“This is an absolutely tremendous accomplishment for Frisco ISD and one that we should all celebrate,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeremy Lyon. “There isn’t another school district in the state that has as many students and schools advancing to compete in this competition. It’s just unprecedented.”
