Frisco ISD Students Earn College Credit Through AP Exams

Aug 24, 2016

The Advanced Placement (AP) program in Frisco ISD continues to grow. This spring, more than 10,000 AP Exams were taken by nearly 5,500 students, an increase of 22 percent from 2015.

The trend highlights efforts at the campus level to recruit students into AP courses and to encourage them to take exams upon completion of each course. In 2015-16, more than 74 percent of Frisco ISD students who enrolled in an AP course took the corresponding exam.

The AP program allows students to take rigorous, university-level courses and potentially earn college credit by earning a score of a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP Exam.

Of the AP Exams taken in Frisco ISD in 2016, 72 percent were a 3, 4, or 5, with an average score of 3.22. Frisco ISD students outperformed the 2016 Texas average score of 2.51, the 2016 U.S. national average of 2.85 and the 2016 global average score of 2.87.

The AP program in Frisco ISD is expanding again this school year, as the new AP Capstone diploma program begins its inaugural year with the AP Seminar course.

“We are thrilled to bring the AP Capstone program to Frisco ISD,” said Angela Romney, FISD area director for advanced academics. “Our goal is to encourage students to take challenging courses that will prepare them for college and careers. The AP Seminar course will add value to our current AP offerings by focusing on building students’ research, writing and analytical thinking skills.

The College Board recognizes students for outstanding achievement on multiple AP exams.

The AP Scholar award is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

The AP Scholar with Honor award is granted to students who receive an average score of 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of a 3 or higher on five or more on these exams.

The AP Scholar with Distinction is awarded to students who receive a 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

The highest award, the National AP Scholar award, is granted to students in the U.S. who receive an average score of 4 on all AP Exams taken and scores a 4 or higher on eight or more exams.

Frisco ISD is pleased to announce that 1,618 students earned one of these honors for their performance on AP Exams in 2016. This is a 32 percent increase in the number of AP Scholars from last year.
