Conrad Li at Inaugural gala event in Washington

Conrad Li, seventh grade student at Scoggins Middle School, has returned to the daily routine of school life after four exciting days in Washington attending the inauguration ceremonies for President Barack Obama.

Li was part of the Junior Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference, which included leadership classes, tours, and special guest speakers such as Former Secretary of Defense Colin Powell, Former Vice President and Al Gore, Former Press Secretary Dee Dee Meyers. Another speaker was Eric Weihmayer, the first blind climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Weihmayer’s presentation and the visit to the National Air and Space Museum were two of the events Li said he enjoyed the most. He has a strong interest in math and science.

Li was very much a part of the inaugural excitement. He and his group stood close enough to see President Obama as he took the oath of office and Li was a guest at the Junior Presidential Inaugural Gala Ball – which had a carnival theme. Li told his school librarian, Tammy Brightwell, he thought the inaugural speech was powerful and addressed the majority of the problems America faces today. He left the event feeling hopeful about America’s future.

Principal Barbara Warner and Li’s instructors say they were very proud to have Li representing Scoggins Middle School at such an historic event.
