| Homa Tavanger shares global experiences with Boals students. She encouraged them to watch movies and read books about other countries, taste other foods and learn words from other cultures. |

Internationally-noted author Homa Sabet Tavangar came to Boals Elementary on Thursday March 11, 2010, to talk to students about what it means to be a global citizen.
During her presentation she shared photos and experiences from her time in West Africa to show culture, customs, and everyday life in another country. But she also shared ways young people and families can have “adventures” and learn more about the world without leaving their home. Ideas she shared including trying different foods – even just a bread from another country; watching movies set in other countries; listening to music; and learning common words in other languages. Her personal stories helped portray the generosity, sense of community and family and environmental stewardship of people across the globe. She used the concepts of friendship and the golden rule to give context to global citizenship.
Tavenger was going to visit with teachers at lunch and will give a parent presentation at 7 p.m. (immediately after Open House) at Boals.
Tavangar’s bookGrowing Up Global, Raising Children to Be At Home in the World, published by Random House, was recently named one of Scholastic Magazine’s Best New Parenting Books – and will be available for sale at the Boals Book Fair that evening with proceeds benefiting the Boals PTA.
She has contributed to Fox News, been covered by the Washington Post, Chicago Sun-Times, Boston Globe among other news organizations and spoken with children and parents around the globe.
