This young elementary student is one of many winners honored by HAF at Frisco City Hall Tuesday. Entries were artworks of historically noted buildings and homes in Frisco.

Heritage student receives award

Frisco ISD students received awards from the Heritage Association of Frisco Tuesday at Frisco City Hall. Mayor Maher Maso was on hand to shake students’ hands and congratulate those who participated in the annual HAF Art and Multi-Media Contest.

First place winners were selected from each of the elementary schools and first and second place winners were selected from the middle and high schools. The multi-media portion included winners from Frisco High School and Wakeland High School.

Students received Chase debit cards for their cash prizes and certificates.The sponsors of the event were Babe’s Chicken and Richardson Bike Mart of Frisco.

This year’s contest theme was the sites around town that have been marked with historical markers by HAF. Favorites this year were the Frisco Water Tower and the old movie theater on Main Street that is now the Masonic Lodge. Judges were Eilene Carver of Collin College, Georgi Still of the Visual Arts Guild, Chuck Venable of CV Editing Services, Judy Isbell and Bob Warren, both of HAF. They judged 650 entries from all of the Frisco ISD schools.

The multi-media contest winners did short film projects that were shown at the awards ceremony. Diego Romo of Frisco High School won first place for his school for a montage of photos set to music of the historical home that houses Randy’s Steakhouse and Stephanie Andriaenssens took 2nd place for a voice-over video of the Maple Street building that was the old high school and is now the Student Opportunity Center. She interviewed Mr. and Mrs. Bob Warren and Debra Purefoy about changes in the school district. Wakeland High School student Micha Caldwell and Brittney Morning shared the 1st place award for their video interview with Jimmy Jones recounting the history of the Hamilton School and Frisco prior to desegregation.
