Gary Burns 2007 Has Great Finish (November, 2007)
Its official, the 8th Annual Gary Burns Frisco Fun Run hosted approximately 3,592 runners and walkers this past Saturday at Frisco Square. "This is huge" says Foundation Director, Allison Miller. Last years event hosted approximately 2,800 runners and walkers reflecting an increase of almost 800 participants thisyear. This is proof the Gary Burns Fun Run is the place to be the last Saturday in October!
Frisco Square was the title sponsor of this years run andand has committed the same for the next two years. Staging the event at Frisco Square and around City Hall Plaza made for an amazing morning.Youcould not have asked for better weather or a better turnout.
The Gary Burns Frisco Fun Run is the signature fundraiser event for the Frisco Education Foundation raising funds for scholarships for FISD graduatingseniors including the Gary Burns Memorial Scholarship and grants for FISD teachers for innovative classroom ideas. This years run raisedover $120,000 toward the Foundation's mission.
The City of Frisco, Frisco ISD, Frisco Police and Fire Departments in addition to generous sponsors, and hardworking volunteer are crucialto the success of the run and greatly appreciated.
Runners and walkers from Frisco, surrounding communities,across the state of Texas,and places such as Florida, South Dakota, California, and Arizona were represented by registered participants.
Trophies and medals were awarded in several categoriesandvarious age groups. Top winners of the morning were Jody Hawkins, Overall Female Overall winner; Joseph McKenna, Overall Male Overall winner; Kathy Dann, Overall Female Masters winner; Bruce Coachman, Overall Male Masters winner; Latralle Thompson, Overall Female Seniors winner and Rodger Olsen, Overall Male Seniors winner.
Civic Teams winning awards were the Frisco Fire Department in First Place and F.A.S.S.T (Frisco Amateur Summer Swim Team) coming in second. Corporate Teams coming in the top three were Integrasys in First Place, DBU-North in 2nd place, and the Texas Tornado rounding out the top three.
FISD Staff andStudent Teams were also looking to win a trophy. The FISD Staff Teams bringing home the hardware were "Big Pappee's Posse" from Centennial High School, "Riddle Rockstars" from Riddle Elementary, and the "Anderson Superstars" from Anderson Elementary. Student Teams placing first through third were Centennial High School Cross Country, Liberty High School Cross Country, and Centennial High School Boys Soccer.
Spirit Awards were also given to Bledsoe and Sem Elementary for their fanfare during the course of day.
