Fisher Students Write Freedom Stories (February, 2008)

student writes freedom story Fisher fifth graders are celebrating African American History Month by creating stories inspired by the theme of freedom.  Students learn about the struggles related to slavery in America and then write their own stories portraying fictional characters who seek freedom using secret maps -- just as Sweet Clara did in the beloved tale, Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt.  Students’ secret maps are then integrated into their writing and are represented in visuals that they design.  This project is a part of the school's larger unit on African American History and the American Civil Rights Movement, according to principal Nancy Lawson
