FOOTBALL – Liberty and Wakeland finished the regular season tied with McKinney HS for 3rd place in the district. Even though all three teams had the same district record of 4-3, and each team beat each other, Liberty and McKinney advanced into the play-offs based on District 9-AAAA tie breaker policies. Liberty defeated Rockwall Heath in the bi-district round of the play-offs to earn a “first ever” post season championship football trophy. The team is led by head coach Galen Zimmerman and captains DavidsonVenancio, Eric Segalini, Corvellas Cage and Malcolm Hill. The Redhawks are scheduled to play Dallas Lincoln in the area round of the play-offs, Friday, November 20th, at Mesquite Memorial Stadium, at 7:30. This is an exciting team to watch and if you haven’t seen them play, Friday night would be a great opportunity.
VOLLEYBALL – Three of the four play-off spots out District 9-AAAA came from Frisco ISD. Centennial and Liberty ended the regular season as District Co-Champions with identical 13-1 records, and Wakeland came in 4th with a 6-8 record.
The Wolverines, coached by Kim Watson were led by Madison Chandler, Hayley Hughes, Joey Collins and Hannah Watson. WHS was defeated in the first round by Richardson Pearce, the eventual regional champs.
Liberty defeated Rockwall Heath and Dallas Wilson before they met up with Richardson Pearce in the regional quarterfinals where they lost a hard fought match. Coach U’ilani Womble, along with stand-outs Paris Perret, El Kale, Loren Byerly and Sammi Nieman represented the Redhawks with a lot of class all season long.
Centennial earned victories against Rockwall, Dallas Adams and a heart stopper against Highland Park (25-21, 27-29, 26-23, 14-25, 15-9). Coach Kari Bensend’s team led by Jenna Risoli, Lauren Larocque and Christina Rolandelli fought hard against Red Oak in the regional semi-finals, but came up short.
All three of these teams have a chance to get back into the play-offs next year. Also, Coach Bensend and Coach Womble earned Coach of the Year honors. Congratulations to the volleyball teams in Frisco. You are all awesome!
CROSS COUNTRY – The last time Frisco ISD had a team stand on the podium at the state championships was when Dr. Reedy was the coach in 1983. History has just repeated itself 26 years later with the Liberty Redhawk boy’s team. However, there were several outstanding accomplishments made this running season from all the schools in Frisco. At Frisco High, Coach Andrew Steele had a regional qualifier in Cameron Gifford. Coach Julie Martin at Centennial led Bronwyn Boswell to a 10th place finish at regional and 38th at state. At Wakeland, the Wolverines had a state medalist. Coach Braegan Enright led Maddie Lundberg to a 15th place finish at regional and Maddie Zimmerman to 4th at regional and 10th at state – which put her on the medal stand (quite an accomplishment for a freshman).
The Centennial boy’s team, coached by Laramie Schmidt, finished 2nd at district and 6th at regional. The leadership that Soren Thompson, Cameron Pulsifer and Eric Thompson provided all season has solidified the Titan program as a yearly contender.
The Frisco girl’s team led by girl’s district coach of the year Sam Reiter has been to state as a team the past four years. That in itself is quite an accomplishment! The leaders for the Raccoons included Jessica Rodriguez, Kristen Matulis and Kerri Matulis. The team placed 1st at district, 2nd at regional and 6th (out of 12 schools) at the state meet.
Everyone knew the Liberty boy’s team was good, but nobody could have predicted this type of a season – not even the boy’s district and regional coach of the year from LHS, Marcus Eckert. The team, led by Brady Turnbull, Josh West, Nick Capps, Michael Daniels and Josh Blandford, were an enjoyment to watch! They finished 1st at district, 1st at regional and 3rd AT STATE!
The Frisco ISD cross country programs are filled with good runners and good coaches. I have a feeling we won’t have to wait another 23 years to get a team up on that medal stand at state – thanks again LHS runners.
TEAM TENNIS – The top four teams from district 9-AAAA team tennis came from Frisco ISD. Wakeland was 1st, Frisco High was 2nd, Liberty was 3rd and Centennial was 4th. However only the top two teams advance to regional.
FHS Coach Brian Woods’ team advanced to the regional quarterfinals. They were led by Devin Powers, Hilary Hager, Charlie Alvarez and Amanda McDonnell. The expectations are high for a successful spring season.
District coach of the year Steve Schkade guided his Wakeland team to the regional semifinals. The leadership of Jordan Reed, Chase Plawman, Merida Thurmon and Yesenia Campos was a big factor in the team’s success.
With eight teams in our district and the top four coming from FISD, it speaks volumes to the coaching and the dedication of these players, and the result is some of the best tennis in North Texas.
