It's not too late to sign up for the Gary Burns Frisco Fun Run.
The annual event, now in its 13th year, will be held Saturday, October 27 at 8 a.m. Registration will continue until the day of the race.
“This is a highly anticipated event,” said Allison Miller, director of the Frisco Education Foundation. “It is truly something great for the young and young at heart.”
The 5K run/walk and 1 mile walk are expected to draw at least 6,000 people to Frisco Square – the most participants ever. An additional 1,200 volunteers will pitch in to monitor the course, distribute water and assist with set-up and clean-up.
“When we first started in 2000, we had one high school,” Miller said. “As the District has grown, this event has grown. It has really become a staple in the community and surrounding communities.”
Due to the increasing size of the race, this year three corrals will separate groups of runners prior to the start of the 5K. Participants will be grouped based on estimated completion time to ensure the safety of everyone.
“We’re getting so large and we have so many different groups of runners from competitive all the way to elementary students or parents with strollers,” Miller said.
As in past years, proceeds from the Fun Run will support programs and events of the Frisco Education Foundation. Last year, the race helped the non-profit fund $200,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors and $66,000 in classroom grants to Frisco ISD staff.
“It is our flagship and the one and only fundraiser that we host,” Miller said. “There’s not going to be a Chili Cook-off this year, so we’re focusing our efforts on this one race to make a difference for the students and staff of Frisco ISD.”
Parents, students, employees and everyone who values the positive health benefits of physical activity are urged to take part.
“I think it’s important that our youth see that the community shows up to support them,” Miller said. “That adults care enough about them to invest in their future by supporting the run and the Frisco Education Foundation.”
