Eleven DECA Students Nationals Bound

Frisco ISD DECA traveled to Corpus Christi on March 1-3 to the Texas DECA State Career Development Conference with 54 students from six campuses. The students participated in various events related to marketing, business, finance, and hospitality. Over 3,000 students statewide competed at the conference for the chance to advance to the International Career Development Conference on April 28 to May 1 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Frisco ISD has eleven state winners advancing to compete at the international conference next month. The winners include Frisco High School students, Stephanie Adriaenssens, Hunter Chitwood, Caitlin Gillespie, and Varun Prasad; Lone Star High School students (above), Alyssa Wright, Stephanie Samuelson, Kate Doerr, and Krista Bojarski; Centennial High School student, Desiree Natali; and Liberty High School students, Annie Lu and Matthew Deng.

BPA National Qualifiers Announced
Ten Frisco ISD Business Professionals of America students competed at the State Leadership Conference in Dallas, March 1-3, earning the opportunity to compete at the National Leadership Conference to be held in Chicago, Illinois in April. BPA is the leading CTSO (Career Technical Student Organization) for students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology and other related career fields. Frisco ISD-TV Takes Home National Awards

Frisco ISD-TV received several honors for work produced during the Student Television Network (STN) national convention held March 21 -24th at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas. More than 1900 student journalists and filmmakers from all over the country were in attendance to experience the various workshops offered and on-site contests. Read more.

Kids Teaching Kids
Medical City and Genghis Grill are in a special partnership with area school districts, including Frisco ISD, to work to protect kids against obesity and diabetes by teaching smart healthy ways to create enjoyable and nutritional snacks for youth. The program utilized CTEC students in Culinary Arts and Graphic Design. The students were featured on Good Morning Texas, December 20. Click here to watch. FISD Graphic Arts Student Designs Winning Poster
Frisco Square Development and Frisco Arts, the Official Art Agency of Frisco,announce the Arts in the Square student artist poster contest winner for the 2012 arts festival. Samantha Hicks, a senior and first year Graphic Design & Illustration student at the FISD Career & Technical Education Center, is this year’s winner with an overwhelming 125 votes; a contest was held for the public’s vote on the Frisco Square facebook page.
Former Frisco ISD-TV Student Makes Anchor Debut
Former Frisco ISD-TV producer/editor and 2009 Frisco High School graduate Ally Crutcher recently made her live anchor cut-ins debut on KOMU, the NBC network affiliate station in Mid Missouri, according to Eva Coleman, Executive Producer of Frisco ISD-TV and instructor at the FISD Career and Technical Education Center. Frisco ISD-TV Student Producer Selected to Present Award
Frisco ISD-TV producer/editor Alyssa Herzog of Frisco High School is one of 12 students selected from around the country to present awards at the Student Television Network (STN) Convention closing ceremony on March 24, 2012. The Student Television Network annual convention will take place March 21st – 24th, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Dallas, Texas. Herzog had to audition for this honor, which included preparing and delivering a script on-camera without the use of a teleprompter. According to the Student Television Network website and contest rules, criteria for selection were “professional presentation, poise on camera, and the ability to deliver copy with a natural, comfortable presentation”. CTEC Boasts Two PLTW Master Teachers

Chris Patterson, an engineering teacher at the FISD CTE Center, has been named a PLTW (Project Lead The Way) National Master Teacher for instruction in Digital Electronics. CTEC Principal Wes Cunningham notes, "This is a huge honor for Chris, for the CTE Center, and for Frisco ISD. We now have two national master teachers, as Ken Strong was named a PLTW National Master Teacher for instruction in Civil Engineering & Architecture last year."

Calf Scramble Winners
Austin Hinson (left in photo) from CHS and Stephen Bechtold from LHS (right) ran in the calf scramble at the Fort Worth Livestock Show at the end of January. Stephen caught a calf and received a certificate for $500 to help with the purchase of a show heifer. Both students are scheduled to run at two more shows in San Antonio and Houston which if won would also which also assist in the purchase of an animal for next year.
New BPA CTE Chapter Takes Home Awards
On Saturday January 21, the new Frisco CTE Chapter of Business Professionals of America competed at the regional conference and won several awards. BPA is the leading CTSO (Career Technical Student Organization) for students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology and other related career fields.
Award Winning Culinary Arts Student
Culinary Arts II/Practicum student Nicole Hathaway (FHS) received two awards January 19, 2012, at the HEAT sponsored Cupcake Battle hosted at Allen High School. Nicole received Best Presentation and placed 2nd out of 48 cupcake entries. Nicole will now proceed to state competition in April.
DECA Tackles Cyber-Bullying
The DELETE Cyber-Bullying project was a collarboaration by DECA, Graphic Design and Web Technologies. The CTE DECA Chapter introduced the campaign regarding the impact of Cyberbullying to the Middle and High Schools in Frisco ISD during November 2011. Lindsey Parking, Liberty Senior, chaired the project and plans to present it at the DECA District Career Development Conference on February 4. She also coordinated the implementation of the campaign with the Graphic and Web courses. The winning logo (shown above) and poster design was created by Advanced Graphic Design student, Christie Shokler. The website created by Web Technologies student Priya Raj. Broadcast Student wins Scholarship

Frisco ISD-TV producer/editor Micha Caldwell of Lone Star High School was awarded a $1500 scholarship by the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists (DFW/ABJ) at their 30th Anniversary Scholarship Gala on Thursday evening, December 1st, featuring CNN’s Soledad O’Brien. Graphic Design partner with Texas DECA
Frisco CTE Center Advanced Graphic Design student, Alberto Angarita, created a banner for Texas DECA's annual community service project. The organization has embraced the challenge of leaving "footprints" in each city hosting the State Career Development Conference. The city of Corpus Christi will benefit from the initial project effort as Texas DECA plans to raise $15,000 for the Texas State Aquarium. The banner will be presented with the check to the city of Corpus Christi and the aquarium with the donation at the conference on March 1-3, 2012. It will also be displayed at each District level conference in an effort to raise the funds toward the project throughout January 2012. Texas DECA intends to use the banner as a trademark of the annual community service in the years to come.
DECA Float Receives Superintendent’s Award
The Frisco CTEC DECA Chapter participated in the Frisco Community Parade on Saturday, November 12. The float featured a silhouette cut-out replica of the photo taken of Marines securing the American flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. Payden McDowell, DECA and FFA member, and Kyle Calverly FFA member, built the float piece. The DECA members on the float wore camouflage t-shirts saying “Frisco CTEC DECA Supports Our Heroes” designed by Henrik Hiort, Advanced Graphic Design student. The Frisco CTEC DECA Chapter’s float received the “Superintendent’s Award” in the high school division.
Chef Garms Awarded Good Neighbor Award

The Greater Dallas Restaurant Association supports Texas ProStart Teachers in numerous ways. One such fashion is a great networking opportunity held at local restaurants which are members of the GDRA for the area teachers. Our last dinner was at the NEW Original Pancake House (tollway and Beltline). Katie Garms was the teacher receiving the most votes for the “Good Neighbor Award” sponsored by OPH. The Good Neighbor Award is given to a teacher that goes above and beyond not only with his/her students, but in assisting fellow teachers with the Texas ProStart Program.

CHS FFA wins National Hall of States Contest
The Centennial HS FFA competed in the National Hall of States contest held in Indianapolis, Indiana. FFA groups from all 50 states along with Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands competed against each other where they were judged on the creativeness of the booth, the information presented, and the students interacting with visitors. The CHS FFA students built a booth to resemble an iPhone, where each of the "Apps" discussed an area of Texas Agriculture or parts of the FFA. Hall of States exhibits help develop pride for members from that state as well as introduce non-residents to the traditions of others states and expose all show attendees to America's agricultural diversity.
Frisco ISD-TV Wins Honors
Frisco ISD-TV stories that recently won first place honors in the Press Women of Texas (PWT) competition have now earned honors in two out of three video categories in the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) High School Communications Competition. See results here.
