FISD MIDDLE SCHOOL RE-TEST POLICY

Click here to download a document of Frequently Asked Questions.

A classroom teacher must assign a grade that reflects a

student’s relative mastery of the curriculum as closely as possible. In accordance with grading guidelines, a student shall be permitted a reasonable opportunity to retest in order to demonstrate their level of mastery with the curriculum. Requirements to retest such as attending tutoring sessions and/or completing remedial assignments will be determined by campus guidelines. A timeline for completing the requirements will be included.

♦All students will be provided the opportunity to retest following the return of each test *

♦The student will be awarded the full value of the retest exam.

♦The retest grade cannot lower the student’s major grade average and will be discounted if this is the outcome of the test.

♦The student will not be given the original assessment for a retest.

*High school credit courses taken in middle school will follow the high school retest regulations. High school retest regulations involve a comprehensive retest during the last week of the grading period. A compete outline of high school retest regulations can be found in the high school student handbook. A copy of this handbook can be accessed on the Frisco ISD website.

PARENTS: IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR FISD POLICY REGARDING HIGH SCHOOL CREDITED COURSES AND G.P.A.

Notice to Sixth Grade Parents and Students

RE: Middle School coursework for high school credit

Beginning with this year’s sixth graders, the graduating class of 2017, if a class is taken in middle school for high school credit, the grade received will count toward the high school grade point average. In the past, a student received the credit but the grade was not computed in the GPA. If you have questions regarding options for these high school credit classes, or about what this change could mean for your student, please contact the counselor at your school.

This policy change is of particular importance in math because 6th grade students who take PAP 6th grade math will be on track to potentially take high school credited math courses in 7th and/or 8th grade. Parents need to understand that the decision to take PAP 6th grade math will result in taking at least one high school credit-bearing course in middle school.

Portal for Students and Parents to Check Assessments through Texas Assessment Management System

This communication is a reminder that the Student Portal is available through the Texas Assessment Management System, delivered through PearsonAccess. The portal provides students and parents access to scores from the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), including TAKS–Modified (but not including TAKS–Alternate), and the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS).

The assessment data in the Student Portal are reached through a Unique Access Code and the student’s birth date as provided on the student’s most recent Confidential Student Report. Students who have lost their Confidential Student Report are instructed to contact their campus to retrieve their Unique Access Code. This same code will be used to access State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) scores in the next assessment year.

Specific features of the Student Portal include the following:

  • viewing student assessment results over the course of a student’s academic career
  • comparing individual student TAKS assessment results to campus, district, and state averages (Comparisons are not available for exit level retests.)
  • examining student performance on TAKS, including individual student scale scores and objective scores
  • examining a student’s TELPAS proficiency ratings, comprehension scores, and composite score/rating.

The Student Portal can be accessed by entering http://www.TexasAssessment.com/Students in a Web browser. This will take users to the Families tab of the Texas Assessment website. From that location, students and parents can click a link that will take them to the Student Portal login page. They are also able to view a guide to the Student Portal and access additional information about the TAKS and TELPAS assessments. Once students and parents have logged in, they will be able to examine test scores in detail, as well as access the guide and explanations of test scores.

For additional information about the Texas Assessment Management System, visit the Frequently Asked Questions page on the Texas Assessment website at http://www.TexasAssessment.com/AMS-FAQs. Contact Pearson's Austin Operations Center at 800-627-0225 with any questions.

Transition to STAAR

State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) starting in the 2011-2012 school year. This new testing system addresses legislative mandates outlined by Senate Bill 1031 in 2007 and House Bill 3 in 2009. While designed to test students’ knowledge and skills in a deeper way,STAAR will continue to be based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

What is different about STAAR?
TheSTAAR tests will be more rigorous than theTAKS tests and are designed to measure a student’s college and career readiness, starting in elementary school. These readiness standards will be defined by thoseTEKS considered critical for success in the current grade/course and important for preparedness in following grades/courses, and ultimately for college and career. The majority of the test (60-65 percent) will concentrate on these readiness standards, butSTAAR will also assess otherTEKS for the current grade/course -- known as supporting standards. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) provides more information about the assessed curriculum for eachSTAAR test at: www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/staar/.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is still developing several aspects of theSTAAR testing system. District documents will be updated as new information becomes available, and TEA will post additional resources to the TEA/STAAR webpage provide above as they are finalized.

The most significant difference between theTAKS and STAAR testing systems will be seen at the high school level. Under theTAKS system, high school students had to pass only four exit-level tests to graduate, and the scores did not count toward their course grades. Under STAAR, first time high school freshmen in 2011-2012 will be required to take 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments in the core content areas – math, science, English and social studies. Fifteen percent of theEOC score will count toward the final course grade for the corresponding class, which will be reported on the student's transcript. The other 85 percent will be determined from the classroom semester grades. More detailed information onEOCs can be found in theFISD High School Student Handbook.

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) starting in the 2011-2012 school year.STAAR will include assessments in the following grades and subjects at the middle school level:

6th grade – Mathematics and Reading

7th grade – Mathematics, Reading and Writing

8th grade – Mathematics, Reading, Social Studies and Science

STAAR will include more difficult testing and require a higher level of student performance. For reading, greater emphasis will be placed on critical analysis of passages rather than literal understanding. The 7th grade writing test will include three compositions: personal narrative that has a clearly defined focus and communicates the importance of or reasons for actions and/or consequences and multi-paragraph essay to convey information about a topic (also referred to as expository).

On the science and mathematics tests,STAAR will include a type of open-ended question known as agriddable item. The purpose ofgriddable items is to allow students to develop answers independently without being influenced by answer choices provided with the questions (commonly known as multiple-choice). Most science and mathematics assessments will include three to fivegriddable items. Illustrations of the test design for grades 3-8 and further explanation aboutgriddable items are available at www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/staar/.

Performance standards forSTAAR at grades 3–8 will be set in fall 2012, after the first spring administration of STAAR.

STAAR™, Student Success Initiative (SSI), and Grade Promotion

Enacted by the 76th Texas Legislature in 1999 and modified by the 81st Texas Legislature in 2009, the Student Success Initiative (SSI) grade advancement requirements applied to the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)reading and mathematics tests at grades 5 and8 prior to the 2011-2012 school year.STAAR will become the assessment used in the SSI process beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. For the 2011-2012 school year only, the Student Success Initiative (SSI) promotion requirements for grades 5 and 8 will not includeSTAAR results. Students will be assessed for promotion to the next grade by other academic information, such as grades, district developed assessments, and teacher recommendations. This transition between the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years is necessary since performance standards forSTAAR at grades 3-8 will not be set until fall 2012. Grade promotion for grades 4, 6 and 7 is not tied to passing STAAR.

As specified by SSI requirements, a student may advance to the next grade level only by passing the state assessments in math and reading or by unanimous decision of the grade placement committee that the student is likely to perform at grade level after additional instruction. The goal of the SSI is to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support they need to be academically successful in reading and mathematics. This effort depends greatly on schools, parents, and community members working in partnership to meet individual student needs. Districts are required to provide remediation to any student who fails aSTAAR assessment, whether in grades 3-8 or high school.
