On February 25, 2010 approximately 400 members of the nation’s largest student organization descended upon the state’s capitol on a day that would go down in history as the first time Texas FFA member sat on the House Chambers floor.
Officers of the Frisco-Liberty FFA Chapter at Liberty High School were honored to be a part of this inaugural event. The first ever Agriculture Education and Texas FFA Day at the Capitol gave FFA members and advisors an opportunity to learn about thelegislative process, specifically addressing agriculture and agricultural education, through workshops and presentations conducted by key political figures in Texas.
The first general session was host to former Texas State officer and the current Texas Agriculture Commissioner, the Honorable Todd Staples. Following Mr. Staples, FFA members met and heard from another former State and National officer, the Honorable Coby Shorter, III, Texas Deputy Secretary of State. Throughout the day students participated in various workshops like “A Day in the Life of a Legislator”, “A Day in the Life of an Executive Office”, “A Day in the Life of a Lobbyist”, as well as “A Day in the Life of a Responsible Citizen”.
The momentous day ended with moving speeches from the Honorable Pete Laney, Former Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives and the Honorable David Dewhurst, Lieutenant Governor of Texas. FFA students were also able to tour the capitol building and grounds, making a stop at the Agricultural Museum which displays the many of the state’s agricultural products, as well as houses the original charter of the Texas Future Farmers of America established in 1929.
