VASE Winners Announced (April, 2008)

VASE winnersCentennial Students at VASEVASE Winners from Liberty and WakelandTwenty-seven Frisco Independent School District high school art students traveled to the University of Houston at Clear Lake to compete in the State VASE (Visual Art Scholastic Event) on Saturday, April 12th. FISD actually had 32 qualify for state and not all could attend.   Statewide more than 17, 500 high school artists participated in the 20 regional VASE competitions in Jan. and Feb. with only 1,764 qualifying to compete at State VASE where FISD students won 24 medals for exemplary Rating IV, according to June Waggener, Frisco High School art teachers..

VASE is sponsored by the Texas Art Education Association to recognize exemplary student achievement in the visual arts by providing art students and programs a standard of excellence in which to achieve.  At regional VASE students were judged on the basis of an interview with a judge and on the artwork itself.  At State VASE students attended art workshops, portfolio reviews and the state exhibition of work followed by the awards ceremony.

Students from all four FISD high schools progressed to State VASE. Kalvin Buenting, Ryan Callens and Esther Han won medals for superior ratings from Centennial High School. Alex Mackey from Centennial also received  a Superior rating for his photograph.


Winning state superior medals from Frisco High School were Fernando Alvarez, Jared Barnes, Hannah Frick, Heather Deiter, Raven Dievenirch, Ashlynn Greenwood, Kilee Herlin, Moon Kang, Trisha Romo, Connor Sims, John Small, Brandon Strait (double medals), Claudia Tapara, Cody Walzel and Rebecca Yan.

Cindy Bai and Cindy Kuang won medals for Liberty High School.  Cindy Kuang also won a “Gold Seal” award for Divisions I. Janell Jarboe, Sandra Kelly and Mindy Ernst from Justin Wakeland High School also won state medals.
