Superintendent's Fall Letter: Student Achievement (November, 2007)

The 2007-2008 school year has been an exciting one so far and I am amazed that we are already 10 weeks into it.

Our main focus as always is the success of our students, but this year we have been looking at it a little differently. As the fastest growing school district in the state and nation, we welcome new students and new teachers at a very high rate. Consequently, dealing more effectively with our mobility factor must be a priority.

When we welcome you to our district as a new student, we will be doing a better job of assessing where you are in your learning and how best to meet your needs. This may involve placement in a class, getting additional tutoring, teaming up with a mentor, among other strategies. Communicating and working with parents in this process is key.

As we evaluate the progress of all of our students, these same approaches will be taken. In addition we have a new software tool we are utilizing that provides us with more individual information on our students’ state assessment results. This will better equip us to determine if we are effectively helping them gain the knowledge they need and at the rate they need to move toward their goal of gaining a diploma.

If you are a new teacher in FISD, particularly someone new to the profession, we are working to provide even more methods of support and growth to help you in your role. We are working to provide frequent and varied professional development opportunities, including time during shared planning periods to discuss lessons and strategies. We are also utilizing our instructional specialists and team/department leaders in different ways to provide more model lessons and team teaching opportunities.

With all of us working together, we think we can move Frisco ISD from being a really good school district to being a great school district. We have all of the pieces in place – great students, supportive parents and community, the best teaching staff available - by working harder and smarter we can move forward and help our students soar.

Thank you for all that you do to support the mission of our district. I look forward to the rest of the year and to watching our students grow and excel.
