Summer Sounds Sweet for FISD (August, 2008)

Boals Elementary School Honor Choir, Fowler Middle School and Wakeland High School’s Wind Symphony Band all entered recordings in state summer competitions and all advanced to state and received top honors. Boals was selected as an elementary state honor choir for the second time, Fowler was named in the top ten middle school bands in the state, and WHS took 2nd place at the state TMEA competition. The honors were reported as follows:

BOALS ELEMENTARY HONOR CHOIR

The Boals Elementary Honor Choir has been selected as a Texas Music Educators Association state honor choir, according to Boals choir director Melissa Ringel. The choir has been invited to perform at the TMEA Convention in February of 2009, Ringel said.

“The Boals Honor Choir was selected as an elementary state honor choir in 2006, making this the second time that we have achieved this distinct honor. It is extremely hard to be selected as an invited state honor group by TMEA. Only four to six elementary ensembles are invited each year from the entire state as an invited state honor choir again and so soon, is even more unusual,” Ringel said.

FOWLER BAND

The Fowler Middle School Symphonic Band advanced to the final round of the Texas Music Educator Association State Honor Band contest.  Out of over 700 Texas middle school bands Fowler Band was awarded 10th place in the State of Texas.

This marks the second time in the history of Frisco that a middle school band has advanced to state. Clark Middle School advanced in 2004.

The FMS recording was judged by blind audition to be one of the two best bands in Region 24 and advanced to the area contest. Region 24 encompasses middle schools from Plano ISD, Lewisville ISD, Denton ISD, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, Justin ISD, and Frisco ISD. Fowler was 1st place out of these schools.

At the Area Honor Band contest, Fowler Middle School advanced to state competing against middle school bands from the entire Northwest part of Texas, the Texas Panhandle, and from as far west as Lubbock. Fowler was 1st Place out of these schools.

For the members of the FMS Symphonic Band this accolade completes their first year in existence and a year of unanimous superior ratings from every judge at every contest in which they competed.

The band is under the direction of   David Dunham, Gayle Amato, and Jenny Denis. Principal Donnie Wiseman offered his congratulations to the directors and to the students and parents of the Fowler Middle School Band for their hard work and dedication.

WAKELAND HIGH SCHOOL

The Wakeland High School Wind Symphony, through recordings made during the Spring of 2007, competed in the Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band Competition. The WHS band advanced in 1st place from Region to Area. WHS advanced in 1st place from Area to State, and we placed 2nd in the TMEA State Honor Band Competition.

The full results are as follows:

1. Argyle HS (Argyle ISD)

2. Wakeland HS (Frisco ISD)

3. Dawson HS (Pearland ISD)

4. Giddings HS (Giddings ISD)

5. Port Isabel HS (Port Isabel ISD)

6. Spring Hill HS (Spring Hill ISD)

7. Athens HS (Athens ISD)

The voting of judges was close between Argyle and Wakeland. Argyle received 3 of 5 votes in 1st place; Wakeland received 2 of 5, earning WHS the prestigious position as "Honor Band Runner-Up". This competition is considered to be one of the most difficult to win in Texas, second only to the State Marching Band Championship.

Director Gerry Miller says he is especially proud of all the great work of the students and also announced that the band will be moving to 4A competition for the 2008-2009 school year.
