Smith Food Drive Earns Mayor Simpson a Piece of the Pie(October, 2007)

Mike Simpson Gets Pie in the FaceMatt Kimball Gets Pie in the FaceMayor Mike Simpson challenged Smith Elementary to beat their own record for collecting food for the disadvantaged last year and promised if they could collect just one pound more than the 15,051 pounds they brought in he would take a pie to the face in front of all the students. The Smith student body brought in more than 22,000 pounds during the month of September.

Mayor Simpson showed up to meet his fate at Good Morning Smith, Friday, October 5. He was joined in his sticky experience by Principal Matt Kimball.

Parent and student volunteers worked hard to sort the collected goods, which spilled out across the stage and into the cafeteria area each week before being collected by the Frisco Family Services truck. The food pantry at FFSC helps families with food, personal hygiene items and cleaning items.

Carol Wilson, FFSC volunteer and frequent substitute teacher at Smith, helped coordinate the activities and was very complimentary about the dedication of the parents and the students who came to help organize the donations. Wilson reported that the students collected 7,393 pounds more than the previous year. The Frisco Family Services food pantry gives out about 26,000 pounds of food each month to needy families, Wilson said.
