Leadership Frisco, FISD Launch Mindbender Academy (June, 2008)

Students at Mindbender AcademyMiddle School students are kicking their vacation off right at a place where fun, art, and science collide: Mindbender Academy.  This week, approximately 120 Frisco Independent School District students are experiencing things they’ve probably only dreamed about. Activities include building a hovercraft, coding their own social network, learning how to make movie magic with real Hollywood special effects, and more. The cost of the camp is only $100.

For more information see or call the Frisco Education Foundation at 469-633-6860.

FISD Mindbender Academy is a new summer program for FISD students entering the 7th and 8th grades for the 2008-2009 school year, and is taking place June 9-13, 8:30 am – noon daily at Fowler Middle School, 3801 McDermott Road Plano, TX 75025 . Plans are underway for this to be an annual event for interested middle school students.

The Mindbender Academy is a result of the passion that the Leadership Frisco Class 11 has for education and to get young people excited about math and science. The Leadership Frisco Class called on the business community to make this camp a reality after approaching FISD about partnering in this endeavor. FISD staff will work as facilitators with the business volunteers from Raytheon, Cisco, and Janimation as they bring the camp curriculum to life. Leadership Frisco class representatives will serve under the Frisco Education Foundation umbrella as committee members to ensure the perpetuity of the camp with the Foundation serving as the fiscal and program agent. Funding for the camp is made possible by the Frisco Education Foundation through restricted grant funds provided by donations from Raytheon, Sanyo Energy, AmerisourceBergen, Strausburger & Price LLP, the Crowder Family Fund, EDS Credit Union, Farstar and North Dallas Bank & Trust to be used specifically for this district initiative. Employees from Raytheon, Cisco, and Janimation will be providing their time, talent, and curriculum for the camp.
