FISD Hosts First Song Fest (May 10,2007)

Smith PTA Tiki Hut for Song FestFrisco Independent School District held its first Song Fest this month at Wakeland High School. The event featured the choral ensembles of the district’s 22 elementary schools and benefited from a distinguished panel of judges, according to Melissa Ringel, lead elementary music teacher for the district.

“It was a very successful day of learning with outstanding judges giving critique to our elementary choirs. The Song Fest gave our students a wonderful and positive performance opportunity,” Ringel said.

Frisco students used to go to a festival at nearby Sandy Lake Amusement Park, but with 22 elementary schools the logistics and safety of transporting so many students became an issue, according to Dr. Daryl Trent, Director of Fine Arts for the District. He was pleased with the results of the first district wide festival, which included a carnival setting manned by local PTA volunteers, he said. Trent noted that this first attempt at a district wide Songfest was a learning experience for all and next year’s event should be even better for students.

Judges for this year were Julie Scott, Elementary Music Coordinator of Richardson ISD, Cecile Johnson, Founder and Director of Woodrow Wilson Elementary All-Star Choir, and Dr. Warren Henry, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, as well as Founder and Director of the University of North Texas Early Childhood Music Program.
