Outstanding FISD Students Selected for
Summer 2005 Lone Star Leadership Academy-Austin Programs (June, 2005)

Sixth Graders Haley Pittman and Morgan Polk of Clark Middle School; sixth graders Julia Stewart, Jasmine Faa and Meagan Wills of Griffin Middle School; sixth grader Lexi Keyes of Pioneer Heritage Middle School; and seventh grader William Lochner of Wester Middle School were among the outstanding Texas 6th and 7th grade students from across the state who have been selected to participate in Education in Action's summer 2005 Lone Star Leadership Academy - Austin programs. Selection for the Lone Star Leadership Academy is based on a student's demonstrated academic success and leadership potential, an educator recommendation and involvement in school and community activities.

These outstanding students will travel to Austin to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas and its leaders. Participants will learn about future career and internship opportunities and visit historically, politically and environmentally significant sites including the Austin offices their State Representatives and
Senators, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, LBJ Library, State Cemetery, Governor's Mansion, State Capitol, Supreme Court and McKinney Roughs Environmental Learning Center. Additional activities will include an evening around the campfire with a cowboy storyteller, ice cream social, IMAX Theater, bat watching on the Lone Star Riverboat, guided rafting program on the Colorado River and a farewell program.

The Lone Star Leadership Academy provides a unique opportunity for outstanding students to learn about the Spirit of Texas and what it truly means to be from the Lone Star State. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills in Leadership Groups. In addition, participants have fun meeting other outstanding students from across the state of Texas and making new friends while adding to their resume of academic achievements, developing leadership skills and bringing home a wealth of information to supplement what they are learning in school.

Education in Action is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young Texans to become informed and active leaders in their communities. In addition to the Lone Star Leadership Academy - Austin program, Education in Action also offers a Lone Star Leadership Academy - Dallas/Fort Worth program for outstanding 5th graders and a Lone Star Leadership Academy - Houston/Galveston program for outstanding Texas 8th graders. Students involved in student government and service organizations are especially good candidates for Lone Star Leadership Academy programs. Facilitator/student ratio is one to 10 and all facilitators are Texas teachers.
