Independent Studies Students Looking for Mentors (September, 2006)

Frisco High School and Centennial High School students who are participating in the Independent Studies and Mentoring class met at the FISD Maple Street Complex to practice mingling, interview techniques and to hear advice from administration and community leaders about personal grooming, presentation and manners.

The students, mostly seniors who are able to meet the stringent requirements for this class, will spend a year working with a mentor in a field they are interested in pursuing. The students will prepare a portfolio and complete a project. Last year, an ISM student interested in fashion created a handbag that came in 2nd place in a national contest. This year’s students have interests that include engineering, events planning, cosmetology, the law, dentistry, computer technology and public relations. Though some students already have mentors, others are still looking for persons who would be interested in sponsoring an ISM student.

This is the sixth year FISD has offered the program. Dr. Rick Reedy, FISD superintendent, praised Laura Simpson, ISM sponsor, for the successful program that she brought to Frisco. She and Di Ann Hill at Centennial now work together and the new high schools will also feature ISM in the coming years.
