Elementary Boundary Adjustment for 2005-2006
Changes Affect Rogers and Ashley Elementary attendance zones (June, 2005)

At the end of May, the Administrative staff met again with the demographer to look at end-of-year enrollments and projections for this fall. During that meeting some changes in housing occupancies caused the Administration to bring a recommendation to the Board to adjust the elementary attendance zones, moving some students from Rogers to Ashley.

The areas of Panther Creek, Dominions at Panther Creek and Creekside at Preston have added children more quickly than the demographer had projected. If those students were left in Rogers for one year as had been hoped (with the use of portables) it would put the enrollment during the year at over 850 students. This is not an acceptable environment for students at Rogers.

Conversely, the neighborhoods currently zoned for the new Ashley Elementary School have not added children as quickly as the demographer had projected. The current number of students living in this area is just below 400. We believe this number will grow to just over 500 during the school year. Adding in the neighborhoods in the Panther Creek area will put them at about 660 students projected for the fall 2005-2006 school year.

Richard Wilkinson stated that the city has assured the district that Eldorado will be complete by the start of school. Additionally, the neighborhoods are more than two miles from Ashley, so transportation will be provided.

After weighing all of these issues, the Board approved rezoning Panther Creek Estates, Dominion at Panther Creek and Creekside at Preston to Ashley for the 2005-2006 school year. In 2006-2007 these students will then move closer to home to Isabel Pierce Sem Elementary (12721 Honey Grove Drive). Although the district does not like to move students twice in two years, it has been experienced many times in our rapidly growing school district.

In order to make sure this type of late change does not have to occur again after school is out, the Administration is working with the demographer to move up the spring update to May 1. A letter is being sent to parents and a meeting has been set for Tuesday, June 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Staley Middle School Cafeteria to answer any questions. The Board did not enter into the decision lightly; members reiterated that the best interest of all students is at the forefront of all we do.
