Renowned Sportscaster Visits Wester (December,2007)

Bivins and Mercer at WMS libraryWester Middle School students are immersed in the world of sports and sports writing as they read the book “Last Shot,” by John Feinstein as part of the school’s One Book, One Community event. The plot of the book revolves around two teen sports writers.

As part of One Book, One Community, Wester hosted professional sportscaster and author Bill Mercer to talk about how he got into sports writing and his experiences in covering the Dallas Cowboys, the Chicago White Sox and professional wresting. His own book, entitled “Play by Play,” is currently available in book stores. He says it is not a book about sports as much as it is a memoir and a book to explain how to get ahead in broadcasting. Mercer happened to have been reporting hard news in 1963 in Dallas when President John F. Kennedy was shot. Currently, Mercer calls the Roughriders games here in Frisco.

“Sports announcer Bill Mercer's visit to Wester was a perfect tie in to our One Book, One School reading selection Last Shot. Last Shot puts two 13 year old sports writers in the middle of an investigation to find out who is blackmailing a marquee collegiate player at the NCAA playoffs,” according to Shelby Bivins, Wester Librarian.
