Battery Recycling Contest Sponsored by City of Frisco (October, 2006)

The City of Frisco and Frisco Independent School District will celebrate Texas Recycles Day by kicking off a battery recycling contest at each FISD school, according to Jeremy Starritt, Environmental Education Coordinator and Dianne Miller, FISD Recycling Coordinator.

A contest to see which school can collect the most pounds of alkaline dry-cell batteries (AA, AAA, B, C, D) and Lithium 9 volts will be sponsored by the city from October 14 through November 11. The loads collected at each school will be weighed on the 11th, and the winning school will hold a small celebration on November 15, Texas Recycles Day.

Texas Recycles Day is also when the city will announce the winner of its citywide Name the Truck contest also sponsored by the Environmental Education office. The school celebration will include a visit from Rufus, the city’s recycling mascot and the newly named recycling truck.

Students will receive information about the contest from the Campus Recycling Coordinators at their campus. This program is also designed to educate Frisco families about the city’s new battery recycling program and teach students about the importance of protecting the environment.
