Centennial Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists (October, 2006)

Siyao “Mark” Fan and An “Norm” QiAn “Norm” Qi and Siyao “Mark” Fan have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program. The two Centennial High School students may now attempt to meet the requirements to be selected as finalists. The finalists and eventual winners are chosen based on grades, an essay and other measurements of academic performance. National Merit Scholarship winners are awarded $2,500 scholarships.

Six Centennial students were also selected as “commended” students based on their performance on the qualifying test. They are Karise Carrillo, Alexandra Grindborg, Luke Gunderson, Alexander Kleinschmidt, Byung Joon Park and Christopher Pierce. Of the more than one million students who take the PSAT exam, 34,000 receive this designation, according to Diane Clair, Centennial counselor.

Chanel Matney was selected as a National Merit Achievement Scholar and was recognized as one of the top African American students who took the PSAT test in 2005.
