Borchardt Student Artists Win Savings Bonds (September, 2005)

Three students from the Borchardt Elementary art program are $2,000 richer this year after they each received $2,000 savings bonds from the Texas on My Mind Art and Literature contest sponsored by Senator Florence Shapiro’s office.

The students, two of whom are still at Borchardt, and one who is now a sixth grader at Clark Middle School, entered the contest last spring. The entries were judged and displayed at the state capital on April 9, the day Senator Florence Shapiro was sworn in as Governor for the Day. The competition was open to all schools within state senate district 8. One grand prize winner was chosen in each grade level. Melissa Rader, art teacher at Borchardt, reports that the students received their certificates and savings bonds this week.

The winners were Titus Deng, now a third grader, Third Grade winner was Mary Kwon, who is now in fourth grade, and Zaheer Pasha, who is now a sixth grader. Each did a painting on canvas based on the theme Texas on My Mind.
