Brand New Teachers Attend Academy (August 24,2007)

FISD Board of Trustees greet new teachers at New Teacher AcademyThe kindergarten kids attend one, the middle school kids attend one and the high school kids have one, too, so is it any surprise Frisco Independent School District offers an orientation for the brand new teachers entering the field?

The New Teacher Academy is offered to the new teachers hired right out of college. This year, the District welcomed about 185 beginning teachers, including the 10 or so who had been hired during the spring semester last school year, according to Ronnie Elmore, Director of Secondary Personnel.

Clark Middle School was the host campus and the teachers, who ranged from very young graduates to mature adults beginning a second career - “people who had the calling to enter the teaching field,” Elmore said. The academy includes a breakfast where Superintendent Rick Reedy, FISD Board of Trustees and other administrators welcome the teachers.

The purpose of the academy is to clarify what FISD expects from teachers during the year. Areas of discussion covered include classroom management, testing schedules and protocol, parent communication, and a host of other issues that administrators have identified over the years as important to share with first time teachers.
