Ashley Holds “Camp Read a Book” Book Fair (May, 2006)

Christina Beran, Assistant Principal at Ashley Elementary, prepares to join the fun at the “Camp Read a Book” Book fair.

Lauren Lazar, daughter of third grade teacher, Jennifer Lazar, joined in on the reading fun at Ashley’s “Camp Read a Book.”

Ashley Elementary celebrated reading with the Scholastic “Camp Read a Book” Book fair during the last week of April. Students found bug vacuums, 3-D insect puzzles, Bug scopes, bird feeders, camp sets, and survival handbooks along with the many books available at the book fair. Students, parents, teachers, and staff gathered Thursday night under the stars to read their favorite books. Sleeping bags and lawn chairs spread across the lawn as teachers read their favorite books to small groups. Parents and students alike lay on sleeping bags all around the school reading their favorite books or the new books they bought at the book fair.

After a brief presentation on the bond election, campers gathered to listen to "Twice Upon a Time Storytellers," Gene and Peggy Helmick, from Richardson. They are members of the Dallas Storytelling Guild. The audience could not get enough of the intriguing stories and asked for “just one more” again, and again. What wonderful adventures the campers read and heard during “Camp Read a Book.”
