Ashley Bluebonnet Bash (January, 2007)
Written by Michelle Mayo, Librarian

Ashley Elementary School students gathered in the library to cast their votes for the Texas Bluebonnet award. Almost 170 students participated this year at Ashley. Each year the Texas Library Association gathers a list of 20 newly published books aimed at students in third through sixth grade. Students must read at least five of the books to qualify to vote. The Texas Bluebonnet award is determined by compiling the votes of all participating Texas students, and the winner is announced in February.

During this year's Bluebonnet bash, Ashley students cast their votes, were the first students to look at next year's nominated books, and received a goody bag. Each Ashley voter received a book, bookmark, a bag of popcorn, and coupons for a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich as well as a free laser tag game from The Zone.

The students were very excited about voting. Ashley Elementary selected The Lightening Thief written by Rick Riordan as their favorite book, by a landslide. Ashley was lucky enough to have Rick Riordan visit the school in October.
