Linguistically Accommodated Testing (LAT)

Grade 10

The LAT assessment process is required by NCLB for recent immigrants who are exempt on the basis of limited English proficiency (LEP) under Texas policy in the flowing subjects and grades:

  • mathematics at grade 10

  • science at grade 10

  • reading or English language arts (ELA) at grade 10

LEP-exempt students receiving special education services

A small number of students in Texas are recent immigrants who have a disability and receive special education services.  LAT administrations of TAKS and TAKS M are available for these students if they are determined to be LEP Exempt.  When taking a LAT administration of TAKS or TAKS M, these students will be able to receive accommodations that address both their special education needs and need s as recent immigrants English language learners.  Students for whom the TAKS accommodations provided on the TAKS (Accommodated) form are also used on the LAT versions of TAKS.  The LEP Exemption process does not apply to recent immigrants who qualify for STAAR Alt.  Because of the design of the STAAR Alt assessment, LEP Exemptions are not necessary.
