Couple Leaves Legacy of Opportunity for Frisco ISD Students

Roger Lawler Donation

A donation from Roger and Jody Lawler of Frisco will make a huge difference for generations of future Frisco ISD students.

The $1 million gift is the largest ever in the history of the Frisco Education Foundation.

The money will establish the Roger Lawler Endowed Honor Scholarship Fund. Interest generated from the endowment will provide college scholarships into perpetuity for graduating FISD seniors.

“This gift represents a major milestone for the Foundation and we could not be more humbled and honored to pay it forward to the benefit of our youth,” said Foundation Director Allison Miller. “It really means a lot that it comes from a family that has worked the land and been part of the community for so long.”

The Lawlers were formally recognized for their generous gift during a special presentation at this year’s Scholarship Night, held May 15 at Dr Pepper Arena.

The Foundation presented more than 700 scholarships totaling nearly $600,000 to help graduating FISD seniors continue their education.

The awards, included those funded by the Foundation and corporate, community and school groups, were presented to 537 students based on a number of criteria including academic achievement, community involvement, volunteer efforts and more.

“The goal is to assist those who would not otherwise be able to attend college due to financial hardship in fulfilling their dream of a post high school education,” said Roger Lawler.

Sam Roach, a longtime supporter of Frisco Education Foundation, first introduced the Lawlers to the Foundation last year. At that time, they donated $18,000 to support three separate $6,000 scholarships for members of the Class of 2013. The $1 million donation was presented in January 2014.

We are proud of FISD and its community partners to have been named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People of 2012, an award given by the America’s Promise Alliance and sponsored by ING. There is a lengthy application process and we have been told that there was stiff competition this year with more than 300 applications being submitted. In order to be considered for the award, communities –which can be defined as a city, township or a school district - must demonstrate in the application process what they do to meet the Five Promises of the America’s Promise Alliance. Those are:

· Caring Adults

· Safe Places

· A Healthy Start

· Effective Education

· Opportunities to Help Others

We are thankful for our many partners in the community who help us meet the needs of our young people and make this a great place to live and raise a family.

The winners of this award receive a $2,500 grant to go toward a program that supports one of the promises, along with two street signs, and a trophy.
