The bilingual dual language program is a bilingual academic program where students learn in both English and Spanish. It utilizes the students’ native language for academic instruction 50 percent of the time and English for 50 percent of the time. Dual language is the only program for Emergent Bilinguals that definitively closes the achievement gap.

One-way dual language supports “one language” group of students to become bilingual, bi-cultural, and bi-literate. In this program, students will develop oral and cognitive academic language proficiency in English and in Spanish while mastering grade level knowledge in skills in the content areas. For example, students whose primary language is Spanish would learn in English and Spanish.

Two-Way dual language supports “two language” groups of students to become bilingual, bi-cultural, and bi-literate. In this program, students will develop oral and cognitive academic language proficiency in English and in Spanish while mastering grade level knowledge in skills in the content areas. For example, both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students would learn in both languages.

FISD has a one-way dual language program.

Participants are native Spanish speaking students in grades PK-5 who are orally limited English proficient and score below the 40th percentile on an English norm-reference test.

Upon registration in a Texas public school, every parent must complete a Home Language Survey. If one of the answers on the two questions of the HLS indicates that Spanish is spoken either by the child or in the home, by law the school must assess the student’s English and Spanish proficiency. If the student scores at a limited English proficiency level, the district must offer a bilingual program.

Yes. The content curriculum for one-way DL is based on the same grade level TEKS and closely follows the district scope and sequence for each subject. The difference lies in the language of instruction of each content area. In PK-1st grades all subject areas are taught in Spanish except for math. In 2nd-5th grades math and English language arts are taught in English and science, social studies, and Spanish language arts are taught in Spanish.

That depends. Many Texas school districts offer the two-way dual language program where both English native speakers and Spanish native speakers learn together in a bilingual class. Since FISD’s bilingual program model is a one-way DL and not a two-way, bilingual transfer students of limited English proficiency are the only ones that may continue in our one-way program when moving to Frisco ISD.

No. The sibling must go through the same identification process that begins with the Home Language Survey.

No. The FISD one-way bilingual DL program is designed to serve our limited English students only, not our native English speakers.

No. The one-way DL program model will only be implemented in the designated bilingual classrooms on the campus. However, we encourage all students and staff to take advantage of the Spanish vocabulary labels and conversational opportunities incorporated into the school environment!

Yes, bus service is provided from the student’s home campus to the program campus.

The geographic location and the lower overall student population of Carroll were both strong factors in the district’s decision. Having a campus to serve students on the west side of the district will enable more qualifying learners to participate.

Yes. Carroll began to house the bilingual DL program during the 2017-2018 school year with kindergarten, first, and second grade students. Each consecutive year an additional grade level was added at Carroll Elementary, with the final transition of 5th grade services occurring during the 2020-2021 school year. During this school year, Pre-K was also added to the campus.

Students from the following campuses who qualify for bilingual DL services will attend Christie Elementary for the program: Ashley, Anderson, Borchardt, Christie, Comstock, Curtsinger, Elliott, Gunstream, Isbell, Liscano, McSpedden, Mooneyham, Norris, Ogle, Riddle, Rogers, Scott, Sem, Shawnee Trail, Smith, Sonntag, Tadlock, Talley, Taylor

Students from the following campuses who qualify for bilingual DL services will attend Carroll Elementary for the program: Allen, Bledsoe, Boals, Bright, Carroll, Corbell, Fisher, Hosp, Miller, Newman, Nichols, Phillips, Pink, Purefoy, Robertson, Sparks, Spears, Vaughn
