Every TAKS test is directly linked to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum. The TEKS is the state-mandated curriculum for Texas public school students. Essential knowledge and skills taught at each grade build upon the material learned in previous grades. For more information on TEKS, please see the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills website at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/teks/.
In 1999 the Texas Legislature enacted the Student Success Initiative (SSI), which requires students to pass selected TAKS test in order to be eligible for promotion to the next grade. Students in grade 3 are required to pass the TAKS reading assessment to advance to grade 4, while students in grades 5 and 8 must pass the TAKS reading and mathematics assessments to advance to grades 6 and 9, respectively. Students in these grades have up to three opportunities to pass the required TKAS tests. These also apply to TAKS (Accommodated).
