Mission:

The mission of the Frisco Independent School District elementary mathematics program is to promote meaningful learning for all students through a comprehensive curriculum.

Our program is committed to maximizing the learning of mathematics in which students are engaged in the process of making sense of mathematics, developing conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts, application of strategies for solving meaningful problems, and working as a community of learners.

Elementary Math Instructional Model:

FISD’s math instructional model is based on the 5E model in which learners investigate phenomenon by creating conceptions, theories and generalizations based on their work.

The 5E model includes five phases of learner centered instruction that moves learners through different levels of understanding including concrete, pictorial, tabular, graphic, and abstract.

5E Model of Instruction

Phase

Description

Engage

  • Generates student Interest
  • Accesses prior knowledge
  • Connect to past knowledge
  • Set parameters of the focus
  • Frame the mathematical idea

Explore

  • Experience key concepts
  • Discover new skills
  • Probe, inquire, and question experiences
  • Examine the students thinking
  • Establish relationships and understanding

Explain

  • Connect prior knowledge and background to new discoveries
  • Communicate new understandings
  • Connect informal mathematical language to formal mathematical language

Elaborate

  • Apply new learning to a new or similar situation
  • Extend and explain concept being explored
  • Communicate new
  • understanding with formal mathematical language

Evaluate

  • Assess mathematical understanding (self, peer and teacher evaluation)
  • Demonstrate understanding of new concepts by observation or open-ended response
  • Apply within problem situation
  • Show evidence of accomplishment
